My senior year of high school I was lucky and drew a general season buck deer tag for the southern region, a Youth Bull Elk tag that allowed me to hunt during the rut on general elk units, and a Panguitch Lake cow elk tag in Utah.
I hunted the entire archery season and the muzzleloader season for deer with no luck. Opening day of the rifle season I had the flu and I could barely walk. So, I shot the first buck that I saw. He was a 2×3. I shot him at 10 yards with a 30-06.
I hunted really hard during the rut for a good bull elk during the youth hunt. I saw some small bulls and a good bull which I missed a shot on from about 300 yards. However, I did get a cow elk on the Panguitch Lake unit in southern Utah. She must have been the lead cow because the whole herd stuck around.
